The family of Judith “Judy” Heumann invites the community to honor her life.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Wednesday, March 8 at 10 a.m. ET at Adas Israel Congregation, 2850 Quebec St. NW, Washington, DC 20008
BURIAL: Following the service at 12 p.m. at Judean Memorial Gardens located at 16225 Batchellors Forest Rd., Olney, MD 20832.
RECEPTION: Following the burial, the family will be receiving guests at a gathering held at Adas Israel Congregation.
SHIVA: Thursday, March 9th at Adas Israel Congregation beginning with a service at 6:00 pm ET.
LIVE-STREAM: The memorial and burial on Wednesday will be live-streamed on Adas Israel’s website. Please click here to join the livestream. Shiva on Thursday will be live-streamed on Zoom.
ACCESS INFORMATION: American Sign Language interpretation and live captioning will be provided for the in-person and live-stream memorial and burial services. Captioning will be available as stream text and embedded into the video player. Captions will be provided in English and Spanish. Programs will be available in large print and Braille.
IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE DETAILS: Doors open at 9:15 a.m.
The synagogue is providing volunteers to direct people to the location of the service. They will be stationed both inside and outside of the synagogue.
Parking is extremely limited. Everyone is encouraged to use the public transportation system. The Cleveland Park metro stop on the Red Line is a block from the accessible entrance to the synagogue.
There is an accessible entrance and elevator when entering from the parking lot in the back of the synagogue.
Because parking is limited, if you need to park an accessible vehicle please arrive by 9:00 am ET.
Public transportation is not available to the burial service. The cemetery is a 30 minute drive from the synagogue.
For those who do not attend the interment, we invite you to remain at Adas Israel Congregation to watch the livestream of the burial service. Judy’s family will return immediately after the interment for the reception.
Due to increased COVID-19 numbers, please consider taking precautions to protect others by wearing a mask. This is not required, but suggested.
TRANSPORTATION: If you are local and need transportation to or from the synagogue as well as the cemetery, please call Martin’s Sedan and Limousine Service at 301-260-9393 by 3:30 pm Tuesday, March 7th and let them know you’re with Makom, who will be covering the cost. There are limited wheelchair accessible vehicles.

BACKGROUND: Judith “Judy” Heumann, widely regarded as “the mother” of the disability rights movement, passed away in Washington, D.C. on the afternoon of March 4, 2023. Judy was at the forefront of major disability rights demonstrations, helped spearhead the passage of disability rights legislation, founded national and international disability advocacy organizations, held senior federal government positions, co-authored her memoir, Being Heumann, and its Young Adult version, Rolling Warrior, and was featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary film, Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.
